Don’t Skip Thanksgiving: Fall Flowers and Centerpieces in Los Angeles

Dahlia Farm Harvest fall arrangement by Coral Path Designs, Los Angeles

You know the moment. The Halloween candy goes on clearance on November 1, and by the next morning the stores are playing Christmas music. Somewhere in there, Thanksgiving just disappears.

We think that’s a shame. Thanksgiving is the one holiday that’s really just about sitting down together. No costumes, no gift lists, no pressure. Just a long table, good food and the people you love. It deserves its moment, and honestly, it’s one of our favorite things to design for.

So before the inflatable snowmen take over the neighborhood, here’s how to give Thanksgiving the table it deserves.

Why fall flowers still belong in November

November in LA is peak season for some of the best flowers of the year. Dahlias, garden roses in coral and rust, mums, and dried textures like wheat and pampas are all at their best right now. The colors are warm and rich in a way that December reds and greens just aren’t.

The Christmas tree can wait four weeks. These flowers can’t.

The Thanksgiving centerpiece

The table is the whole point of Thanksgiving, so the centerpiece matters. A few things we’ve learned from years of designing them:

Keep it low. Guests should be able to see each other across the table. Anything over about 12 inches gets in the way of conversation.

Go long, not tall. For a long table, a runner of flowers or two or three smaller arrangements works better than one big piece in the middle.

Leave room for the food. Plan where the turkey and sides are going before you place the flowers.

Unscented is better. Strong fragrance competes with the meal. Dahlias, mums and most roses are perfect for the table.

Add candles. Fall flowers look their best in warm, low light.

Flowers for the host

If someone else is hosting this year, skip the grocery store bouquet. A real fall arrangement is a thank-you the host will look at all weekend, long after the leftovers are gone.

One tip: send it the day before, not the day of. The host is busy enough on Thursday without having to find a vase. A finished arrangement that arrives Wednesday is ready to go straight on the table.
