Halloween doesn’t have to mean plastic skeletons and fake cobwebs. Some of the best Halloween decor we see every October is real flowers: deep burgundy, near-black, burnt orange, and moody greens that look dramatic on a dinner table and still feel elegant. If you’re hosting a party, bringing a gift to a Halloween dinner, or just want your home to feel like fall, here’s how we approach spooky season at Coral Path Designs.
The Halloween flower palette
The trick to Halloween flowers is going dark without going gloomy. We build most of our October arrangements around three color families:
Deep reds and near-blacks. Dark red roses, burgundy dahlias, and deep calla lilies read almost black in low light, which is exactly the effect you want at a candlelit dinner.
Burnt orange and rust. Orange roses, mums and dahlias bring warmth, so the arrangement feels like autumn instead of a haunted house.
Texture. Celosia, amaranthus and berries add that slightly wild, slightly eerie look. A few twisting branches or mini pumpkins tucked into the design go a long way.
Flowers that work for Halloween
Roses. The classic, but in deep red or burnt orange, they feel completely different from a Valentine’s bouquet.
Dahlias. Peak season runs into fall, and the dark varieties are some of the most striking flowers of the year.
Chrysanthemums. Mums are the unofficial flower of autumn and come in rust, bronze and deep purple.
Celosia and amaranthus. Velvety, draping and a little strange. Perfect for October.
Calla lilies. Dark callas are sleek and dramatic. One note: true lilies (Asiatic, Easter, stargazer) are seriously toxic to cats, and even calla lilies can irritate a cat’s mouth — if you’re sending flowers to a cat owner, let us know and we’ll design around them.
Halloween flower ideas
For a party host. Skip the bottle of wine and bring flowers that match the night. A moody hand bouquet or vase arrangement in burgundy and orange is something the host will actually keep.
For your dinner table. Keep centerpieces low so guests can see each other, and pair them with candles. Dark flowers look their best by candlelight.
For someone you love. A hat box in deep red and black blooms is a romantic twist on Halloween, and it still works long after the 31st.
For events. Planning a Halloween party, a fall wedding or a themed event? We design full floral setups for events across Los Angeles.
Our Halloween Collection
Día de los Muertos flowers in Los Angeles
Right after Halloween comes Día de los Muertos on November 1 and 2, one of the most meaningful traditions in Los Angeles. Marigolds, known as cempasúchil, are the heart of the holiday. Their bright orange color and scent are traditionally believed to guide spirits home to the ofrenda. If you’re building an altar or honoring a loved one, we’re happy to put together marigold arrangements or something more personal. Just reach out ahead of time so we can source what you need.
